Le format de la signature permet de situer cette aquarelle, non localisée, postérieurement à 1900.
Dans une atmosphère automnale, William Thornley met en scène trois pêcheurs, ici de simples silhouettes, s’affairant dans une barque. Un pont relie deux bords opposés de ce qui ressemble plus à un lac qu’à une rivière. Une belle demeure se dégage à gauche de cet ensemble. De l’utilisation d’un camaïeu de mauves pastellisés résulte une atmosphère diaphane, intimiste, où se noient dans une légère brume les arbres situés au fond de la composition et leurs reflets dans l’eau.
A droite, une petite tache rouge « à la Corot » suscite un point d’attraction visuel qui réveille l’ensemble de ce joli paysage.

In an autumnal atmosphere, William Thornley depicts three fishermen, here simple silhouettes, busying themselves in a boat. A bridge connects two opposite sides of what looks more like a lake than a river. A beautiful residence emerges to the left of this ensemble. The use of pastellized mauve shades results in a diaphanous, intimate atmosphere, where the trees located at the bottom of the composition and their reflections in the water are drowned in a light mist.
On the right, a small red spot “à la Corot” creates a visual point of attraction which awakens the whole of this pretty landscape.
