Cette composition, non localisée, et aux effets contrastés, met en scène un moulin aux formes atypiques. Dominant un hameau, Il se dresse, déployant ses fines ailes face aux vents du large, en surplomb d’une colline qui descend doucement vers la mer.
Un magnifique ciel chargé de nuages aux formes tourmentées, lui sert de toile de fond.
En général, William Thornley utilise le jaune avec parcimonie dans ses compositions. Ici, il y recourt assez exceptionnellement sans réserve pour représenter les herbes fanées qui s’offrent à notre regard.
