Parmi les nombreux paysages réalisés par William Thornley figurent en bonne place les représentations de cours d’eau, et les scènes lacustres. Nombre d’entre elles ont été exécutées « in situ » comme c’est le cas, fort probablement, pour cette aquarelle dont la localisation n’est pas précisée. Le format de la signature permet de dater cette œuvre de petit format bien après 1900.
L’artiste voyageur « a la touche large et parfois fougueuse, avec des ciels vastes et aérés (..) a la vison d’un touriste qui ne se lasse pas de communier avec la nature »(Echo Pontoisien, Notes d’Art du 18 décembre 1921).

Among the many landscapes produced by William Thornley are the representations of rivers and the lake scenes. Many of them were executed « in situ », as is most likely the case for this watercolour, the location of which is not specified. The format of the signature makes it possible to date this small-format work well after 1900.
The travelling artist « with a broad and sometimes fiery touch, with vast and airy skies (…) to the vision of a tourist who never tires of communing with nature » (Echo Pontoisien, Notes d’Art of December 18, 1921).
