C’est en 1896 que William Thornley commença une série de 10 expositions à la Galerie Georges Petit.
Georges Petit (1856-1920) fut un galeriste et marchand d’art français actif à Paris de 1881 à sa mort, en 1920. Il ouvrit sa galerie en 1881 au 12, rue Godot-de-Mauroy, puis au 8, rue de Sèze à Paris à Paris. Avec le temps, il devint un acteur majeur du marché français de l’art.
B.Guinaudeau, dans l’édition du 16 juin 1899 du journal l’aurore, déclara à propos d’une expositon de Thornley dans la Galerie Georges Petit : « Beaucoup d’artistes avant M.Thornley ont peint les mêmes paysages (..) peu l’ont fait avec autant de conscience, de grâce enveloppante et de finesse ».

B.Guinaudeau, in the June 16, 1899 edition of the newspaper l’aurore, declared about an exhibition by Thornley in the Galerie Georges Petit: “Many artists before M.Thornley painted the same landscapes (.. ) few have done it with as much awareness, enveloping grace and finesse.”
