Italo Sabatini was born in Nice in 1865. His parents were Italian. He lived in Antibes between 1918 and 1936. As a painter, he became close to William Thornley by joining, like him, the Antibes Society of Fine Arts, which the master landscapist had founded in 1928. Sabatini painted his portrait around 1932-1935. This beautiful oil on canvas is now housed at the Pissarro-Pontoise Museum of Art and History (MAHPP). It was donated by Félix Robin (a former student of Thornley) in 1958 to the Tavet Museum in Pontoise.
