L’œuvre de Degas (Femme se faisant peigner les cheveux) qui servit de modèle à William Thornley est un pastel de 74x 60,6cm qui fait partie des collections du Metropolitan Museum of Art de New-York aux Etats-Unis. Ce pastel a été réalisé entre 1886 et 1888. Acheté initialement à Edgard Degas par la Maison Goupil et Boussod Valadon en 1888, il échoit, après plusieurs ventes parisiennes, au Galeriste Durand-Ruel qui l’acquiert en 1914 pour le compte d’une américaine, Mme H. O. [Louisine] Havemeyer, (1855-1929).
Louisine Havemeyer est une collectionneuse d’œuvres d’art et une mécène qui a favorisé la promotion des impressionnistes aux États-Unis. En 1929, le pastel fait l’objet d’un don au Metropolitan Museum of Art de New-York. ( Inv. 29.100.35)

The work by Degas served as a model for William Thornley is a pastel of 74x 60.6cm which is part of the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in the United States. This pastel was made between 1886 and 1888. Initially purchased from Edgar Degas by the Maison Goupil and Boussod Valadon in 1888, it fell, after several Parisian sales, to the gallery owner Durand-Ruel who acquired it in 1914 on behalf of an American, Mrs. H. O. [Louisine] Havemeyer, (1855-1929). Louisine] Havemeyer was an art collector and patron who promoted the Impressionists in the United States. In 1929, the pastel was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. (Inv. 29.100.35)
