Une des quinze lithographie originales (20,5x 26,2cm) tirée de l’album édité par Boussod, Valadon & Cie, 1889. L’album (au format de 47,6x35cm) a été imprimé à seulement 100 exemplaires par la maison Becquet Frères. La valeur d’un jeu complet de ces lithographies se situe à l’heure actuelle entre 30 et 40 000 € selon l’état.
Cette lithographie, signée en bas et droite par William Thornley, a été réalisée d’après Edgar Degas qui fréquenta intimement le milieu de l’Opéra. Le modèle n’est pas une composition au pastel, à la « poussière d’aile de papillon », mais une huile sur toile de 1878-1879 – The Rehearsal (47,6cm x 61cm) qui est conservée par la « Frick Collection Museum de New-York. Ce tableau est probablement la toile présentée par Degas lors de la quatrième exposition des impressionnistes en 1879. Il appartenait alors à Henri Rouart (1833-1912), un de ses amis (ingénieur, industriel, artiste-peintre et collectionneur français).
Il fut vendu en 1912 avec plusieurs autres œuvres importantes de Degas. M. Frick en devint propriétaire, en acquérant le tableau un an et demi plus tard.
la « Frick Collection Museum de New-York » possède également depuis 1996 une lithographie bistre et non sanguine (20,5x 26,2cm) reproduisant la même œuvre.

One of the fifteen original lithographs (20.5x 26.2cm) from the album published by Boussod, Valadon & Cie, 1889. The album (in the format of 47.6x35cm) was printed in only 100 copies by the Becquet Frères publishing house. The value of a complete set of these lithographs is currently between 30 and 40,000 € depending on the condition.
This lithograph, signed lower right by William Thornley, was made after Edgar Degas who was closely associated with the Opera world. The model is not a pastel composition, with « butterfly wing dust », but an oil on canvas from 1878-1879 – The Rehearsal (47.6cm x 61cm) which is kept by the « Frick Collection Museum in New York. This painting is probably the canvas presented by Degas at the fourth exhibition of the Impressionists in 1879. It belonged at the time to Henri Rouart (1833-1912), one of his friends (French engineer, industrialist, painter and collector).
It was sold in 1912 with several other important works by Degas. Mr. Frick became the owner, acquiring the painting a year and a half later.
the « Frick Collection Museum in New York » also has since 1996 a bistre and non-red chalk lithograph (20.5x 26.2cm) reproducing the same work.
