Cette aquarelle, très ancienne et aux apparences minimalistes, est remarquable à plusieurs égards. Tout d’abord, elle est exceptionnellement datée de 1877. Le jeune peintre a tout juste vingt ans. Il débutera, une année après, sa carrière officielle au Salon de Paris (en 1878). Et, finalement, elle est à rapprocher d’une oeuvre similaire qui fut réalisée, toujours la même année, en 1877, par son père, Julian Thornley. Cette petite aquarelle a fait l’objet d’une exposition réalisée au Musée William Thornley (au Château de Grouchy à Osny) du 1er septembre au 16 décembre 2022.
This watercolor, very old and with minimalist appearances, is remarkable in several respects.First of all, it is exceptionally dated 1877. The young painter is just twenty years old. One year later, he began his official career at the Paris Salon (in 1878). And, finally, it can be compared to a similar work which was produced, still in the same year, in 1877, by his father, Julian Thornley. This small watercolor was the subject of an exhibition at the William Thornley Museum (Osny) from September 1 to December 16, 2022.
