On aperçoit, vue de dos en regardant de l’Eglise Saint-Jacques, une statue qui domine la place Nationale. Elle a été réalisée par Antoine Dantan (1798-1878) sculpteur dieppois en 1844, qui représente Abraham Duquesne, capitaine dieppois et huguenot, (1610 ? – 1688) posant, le regard porté vers la mer, en marin victorieux.
Le modèle s’approchant au mieux (à quelques différences près) de cette lithographie est une huile sur toile (Place du marché à Dieppe – 46x61cm) qui a fait l’objet d’une vente à Lucerne (Suisse) en novembre 2011. Il existe également au moins une aquarelle, (Voir la fiche 162 place de marché – vente des Andelys, du 6 juillet 2024, lot 272) réalisée probablement en 1907, qui reprend le même thème, avec d’autres variantes.
En 1899 Thornley réalisa plusieurs de ses œuvres à Dieppe. Il y retourna également en 1907. Partant de cette hypothèse, et sachant que Thornley arrêta définitivement la lithographie en 1918, cette lithographie a probablement été réalisée aux alentours de 1900, ce qui est compatible avec le style de la peinture à l’huile et au format de sa signature.

The sale at Drouot on Monday February 11, 1901 (private collection of Georges Feydeau) includes a painting (lot 94), « Place du Marché à Dieppe », which was sold for 1,650 francs at the time – or around €5,000 on the market. based on the value of one euro in 2018 – (60cm x 81cm).
We see, seen from the back looking from the Saint-Jacques Church, a statue which dominates the Place Nationale. It was created by Antoine Dantan (1798-1878), a Dieppe sculptor in 1844, which represents Abraham Duquesne, Dieppe captain and Huguenot, (1610? – 1688) posing, looking out to sea, as a victorious sailor
In 1899 Thornley produced several of his works in Dieppe. Based on this hypothesis, and knowing that Thornley definitively stopped lithography in 1918, this lithograph must have been produced after 1900 but before 1918, or even, perhaps, as the format of the signature suggests, between 1910 and 1918.
