Cette aquarelle qui représente les bords de l’Oise porte au dos la mention « Bords de l’Oise » et « Chaponval ». Elle permet de situer l’endroit où cette œuvre a été réalisée par William Thornley, le « lumineux peintre des aquarelles » (*) , peu avant l’entrée d’Auvers-sur-Oise, sur l’axe qui relie Pontoise à Auvers.
William Thornley fut un élève d’Eugène Cicéri (1813-1890) qui partageait les valeurs communes des peintres « pleinairistes » issus de l’Ecole de Barbizon. Nombre de réalisations de William Thornley (comme celle-ci) reprennent donc naturellement ces codes dans la représentation de bords de rivières, et d’étangs. Le format de la signature et le style de l’œuvre permet de la dater après 1900.

This watercolor, depicting the banks of the Oise, bears the inscription « Bords de l’Oise » and « Chaponval » on the back. This helps to locate the location where this work was created by William Thornley, the « luminous painter of watercolors » (*), shortly before the entrance to Auvers-sur-Oise, on the road linking Pontoise to Auvers.
William Thornley was a student of Eugène Cicéri (1813-1890), who shared the common values of the « pleinairist » painters from the Barbizon School. Many of William Thornley’s works (like this one) naturally adopt these codes in their depiction of riverbanks and ponds. The format of the signature and the style of the work allow us to date it after 1900.
