Malte. Le Port de Lavalette (aquarelle 25x35cm) – Collection privée – entre 1880 et 1895.
Cette aquarelle du Port de Malte est tout à fait exceptionnelle. C’est, à ma connaissance, la seule aquarelle attestant du séjour du peintre à Malte.
On pense qu’il est parti à Malte suite à un séjour initié en 1880 (*) qui passait par l’Italie en partant du midi de la France (Provence, Var, Riviera française puis italienne). Cependant, le format de la signature ne semble pas correspondre à celui utilisé par le peintre à cette période là, mais à une date plus tardive. L’édition du « Gil Blas » du 27 octobre 1895 fait mention d’un voyage en Tunisie (non loin de la Sicile). Ces propos d’un journaliste sont ils fiables ? Sous réserve qu’ils soient exacts, alors on pourrait envisager comme étant possible une étape à Malte en 1895 après un séjour sur la Riviéra. Mais ce n’est, à ce stade, qu’une pure hypothèse.

This watercolor of the Port of Malta is quite exceptional. It is, to my knowledge, the only watercolor attesting to the painter’s stay in Malta. We think that he left for Malta following a stay initiated in 1880 which passed through Italy starting from the south of France (Provence, Var, French and then Italian Riviéra).
