Cette aquarelle a fait partie de « l’accrochage » réalisé à Osny (au musée William Thornley) pour l’Exposition du 4 mai au 15 juillet 2022 « William Thornley ou l’amour des arbres ».
A cette occasion, avec une trentaine de pièces, ont été présentées des oeuvres du fonds d’atelier de l’artiste dont l’acquisition s’est faite en décembre 2020. Elève d’un peintre « de l’école de Barbizon », Eugène Cicéri (1813-1890), William Thornley appris à dessiner puis à peindre les arbres. Son talent fut, du reste, reconnu à cet égard.
Un critique d’Art écrivit à son sujet : « Il a des indications nettes et sûres, une parfaite connaissance des essences d’arbres ».
L’artiste soigne tout particulièrement les détails d’un Sous-Bois, dont les frondaisons de l’arbre situé en premier plan. La palette des teintes est réduite (verts et ocres dominants). Une touche délicate et diaphane de bleu violacé attire subtilement le regard, invitant peut-être à s’engager plus avant dans la forêt.
This watercolor was part of the “hanging” produced in Osny (at the William Thornley museum) for the Exhibition from May 4 to July 15, 2022 “William Thornley or the love of trees”. On this occasion, with around thirty pieces, works from the artist’s studio collection were presented, the acquisition of which was made in December 2020. Student of a painter « from the Barbizon school », Eugène Cicéri (1813-1890), William Thornley learned to draw and then paint trees. His talent was, moreover, recognized in this regard.
An art critic wrote about him: “He has clear and sure indications, a perfect knowledge of tree species.”
The artist pays particular attention to the details of an undergrowth, including the foliage of the tree located in the foreground. The palette of colors is reduced (dominant greens and ochres). A delicate and diaphanous touch of purplish blue subtly attracts the eye, perhaps inviting you to venture further into the forest.
