L’album (au format de 47,6x35cm) a été imprimé à seulement 100 exemplaires par la maison Becquet Frères.
L’œuvre originale qui servit de modèle à William Thornley est un pastel de 21x16cm (Collection privée) qui date de 1879. Elle est référencée MS881 dans le catalogue raisonné numérique consacré à Edgard Degas (Expert Michel Schulman). Le pastel fut vendu une première fois peu avant la mort de son propriétaire, Henri Rouart (1833-1912) un industriel, artiste-peintre et collectionneur français qui était un ami intime de Degas. En 1993, ce Pastel a intégré une collection particulière, à Boston aux Etats-Unis.
Un autre pastel (pastel, gouache et crayon) représente une scène très voisine. Ce pastel (MS-445) est conservé au Cincinnati Art Museum (Ohio, Etats-Unis)

The original work that served as a model for William Thornley is a 21x16cm pastel (Private collection) dating from 1879. It is referenced MS881 in the digital catalogue raisonné devoted to Edgar Degas (Expert Michel Schulman). The pastel was first sold shortly before the death of its owner, Henri Rouart (1833-1912), a French industrialist, painter and collector who was a close friend of Degas. In 1993, this Pastel entered a private collection in Boston, United States.
