Une très belle aquarelle réalisée à Saint-Nectaire (Puy-de-Dôme) par William Thornley (Le lieu est précisé au dos du tableau). Campé sur les contreforts du Mont Sancy, la station thermale de Saint-Nectaire (en occitan Sant Neitare) doit son nom à son église romane du XIIème siècle consacrée à Saint-Nectaire.
William Thornley n’a pas fait le choix ici de décrire un coeur de ville avec ses monuments historiques perchés en hauteur (Saint-Nectaire -le-Haut), mais plutôt (à priori) l’entrée basse du village de l’époque (Saint-Nectaire-le-Bas). Malgré tout, le fond du décor, parsemé ici et là de quelques conifères, nous rappelle que nous sommes en altitude (390m pour la partie basse), et que l’architecture des maisons est adaptée à un climat de montagne, comme c’est le cas en Auvergne.

William Thornley (The location is specified on the back of the painting). Camped on the foothills of Mont Sancy, the spa resort of Saint-Nectaire (in Occitan Sant Neitare) owes its name to its 12th century Romanesque church dedicated to Saint-Nectaire.
William Thornley has not chosen here to describe the heart of the town with its historic monuments perched high up (Saint-Nectaire -le-Haut), but rather (a priori) the lower entrance to the village of the time ( Saint-Nectaire-le-Bas). Despite everything, the background of the decor, dotted here and there with a few conifers, reminds us that we are at altitude (390m for the lower part), and that the architecture of the houses is adapted to a mountain climate, as is the case in Auvergne.
