Cette lithographie de William Thornley a été réalisée d’après une peinture à l’huile de Claude Monet (60x71cm) exécutée en 1879. Le tableau (Vétheuil dans le brouillard) se trouve aujourd’hui au musée Marmottan à Paris (Legs de Michel Monet, 1966 – inv. 5024)
En août 1878, les Monet et les Hoschedé se sont installés dans une petite maison située à Vétheuil (près de Pontoise). Ils y restent jusqu’en 1880 avant de partir pour Poissy, puis pour Giverny en 1883. Camille, l’épouse de Monet meurt à Vétheuil en 1879, l’année de la réalisation de cette toile. Alice, l’épouse d’ Ernest Hoschedé (1837-1891) qui est souvent absent, est entre-temps devenue la compagne de Claude Monet. Il l’épousera en 1892.

This lithograph by William Thornley was made after an oil painting by Claude Monet (60x71cm) executed in 1879. The painting (Vétheuil in the Fog) is now in the Musée Marmottan in Paris (Bequest of Michel Monet, 1966 – inv. 5024)
In August 1878, the Monets and the Hoschedés moved into a small house located in Vétheuil (near Pontoise). They remained there until 1880 before leaving for Poissy, then for Giverny in 1883. Camille, Monet’s wife, died in Vétheuil in 1879, the year this painting was painted. Alice, the wife of Ernest Hoschedé (1837-1891), who was often absent, had in the meantime become Claude Monet’s companion. He married her in 1892.
